Andromeda is also hosting France Telecom and GTSHIPS of the UK as a part of this seminar. France Telecom, an INMARSAT service provider for Andromeda, will present Fleet 77 and other developments in INMARSAT technology. GTSHIPS, which provides e-mail to Andromeda vessels, will be talking about how to make better use of equipment onboard and will be discussing the enhancements due to the GTMail software in the near future. Carroll has assumed the position of President and CEO of Iridium Holdings, parent company of Iridium Satellite LLC. Gino Picasso, President and CEO of Iridium Satellite LLC will remain in his current position and report to Mr. Carroll. ____ Sperry Marine to supply navigation and communications to patrol vessel http://wwwl.sperry-marine.com Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit has been selected to provide the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency's (SFPA) newest patrol vessel with a suite of navigation and communication systems. Sperry Marine will supply a complete integrated bridge system (IBS) with electronic chart display and information system. The equipment suite includes BridgeMaster E flat-screen radars, fibre-optic gyrocompass, adaptive autopilot, speed log, DGPS, automatic information system, doppler speed log and all radio and satellite communication systems. ____ MTN to provide shipboard wireless internet communications on Norwegian Sun http://www.mtnsat.com Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), Florida, will provide remote wireless Internet capabilities onboard Norwegian Cruise Line's vessel, Norwegian Sun. MTN has formed an alliance with internet solutions company PCTEL to provide wireless access to the cruise industry. Norwegian Sun guests who bring their own laptop will be furnished with a wireless network card that provides 24 hour access to the Internet and their e-mail in designated locations throughout the ship. The installation of the wireless software is simple, requiring no reconfiguration of the passenger's computer and will take up no hard drive space once the passenger leaves the ship. Laptops will also be available to rent for other passengers who prefer to use the internet away from the internet café currently onboard. ____ MTN announces new news service http://www.mtnsat.com Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), announced its agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) to become the fleet-wide provider for OceanNews onboard newspaper services. MTN has formed an alliance with NewspaperDirect, which will allow guests on the NCL vessels to receive same-day editions of their favourite newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, while at sea. Transmitted via satellite and the Internet, the newspaper available on the ship is the same as the one delivered on land, complete with all editorial and advertising content. ____ Successful Trinity House UAIS trial www.tidelandsignal.com AIMS MIII, the universal automatic identification system (UAIS) from Marine Data System (MDS) of South Africa, has completed a successful 18 month trial in the Solent. The trial was conducted by Trinity House, in collaboration with ABP Southampton, Red Funnel Ferries, Condor Marine, MDS, and Tideland Signal - worldwide distributors of the system. Among the organisations observing the trial were the Maritime coastguard Agency, the Radio Communications Agency, and the Royal Institute of Navigation. The test involved Tideland installing a UAIS base station at Southampton's vessel traffic system (VTS) centre and integrating UAIS transponders into the ECS systems on the bridges of three vessels using the port. The principle objectives were to evaluate the impact of the system on the end-user and to demonstrate the inter-operability of the UAIS. Roger Brown, Managing Director of Tideland Signal, claimed, "The trials have proved conclusively that UAIS will significantly reduce the workload of VTS centres, by automatically identifying vessels so that there is no need to radio them in order to find out their call sign, MMSI, cargo, course and other details." *** SECURITY *** Savi technology and OneSeal announce plans for new security seal http://www.savi.com Savi Technology and OneSeal announced at the U.S. Maritime Security Expo in New York that they will jointly develop and market a disposable, low-cost, electronic bolt seal that automatically transmits alerts over radio frequencies when locking mechanisms on cargo containers are tampered with or violated. The new electronic seal will combine EchoPoint, Savi's latest, sixth-generation, active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, with OneSeal's design and manufacturing skills for high-security locks. The partners plan to introduce a widely affordable product by early next year that will improve the security and management of cargo containers. The plastic-coated metal seal, which will include an active smart tag with an integrated circuit board and miniature RFID antennae, will be engineered for the security of all kinds of cargo containers and will be designed to be seamlessly integrated with Savi's SmartChain real-time software platform and Transportation Security System software application. ____ BIMCO to meet with US officials http://www.bimco.dk BIMCO has announced that it has arranged for meetings to take place with representatives from the U.S. Customs Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), the U.S. Coast Guard and other high ranking officials. BIMCO president Michael Everard comments, "This is a very important visit to the U.S, not only for BIMCO and its members but for the entire shipping community." He adds, "There are a number of very important security issues currently under consideration in the U.S. which will have a direct impact on shipping and on trading with North America." These meetings are a direct result of consultations held between BIMCO and a number of Washington officials earlier this year. Topping the agenda is the recent joint industry appeal concerning U.S. security costs and procedures submitted by BIMCO on behalf of ISF, ICS, INTERCARGO, BIMCO believes the meetings in Washington will address current concerns and identify possible solutions. ____ Elite International Transportation joins C-TPAT http://www.eliteint.com Elite International Transportation, a logistics provider to the chemical, petrochemical, and food industries, has announced that it has submitted its application to join the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). C-TPAT is a US Customs initiative developed to protect global commerce from terrorism. Established in March 2002 for importers and carriers, the C-TPAT program was expanded on August 26, 2002 to customs brokers, freight forwarders, and non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs). US Customs requires C-TPAT participants to establish and enhance policies to improve supply chain security practices in the areas of procedural security, physical security, personnel security, education and training, access controls, manifest procedures, and conveyance security. *** SOFTWARE *** Tradelink and bolero.net to provide new system for Hong Kong traders http://www.tradelink.com.hk/ http:// www.bolero.net Tradelink Electronic Commerce, Hong Kong's largest e-commerce service provider, has entered into a collaboration agreement with Bolero International, to provide Hong Kong traders access to a secure, electronic document transfer system. The collaboration agreement gives Hong Kong vendors connection to their overseas buyers through the bolero.net services, which include a Core Message Platform and Title Registry Service, via Tradelink's Trader Documentation platform. By virtue of the cooperation, Hong Kong's trading community can be linked to their buyers or sellers overseas and handle trade documentation seamlessly without costly discrepancies. As an integral part of the agreement, Tradelink will market and sell the bolero.net services in Hong Kong as well as provide customer support to traders using the services. ____ ICTSI furthers its e-commerce applications. www.ictsi.com International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has added new electronic supplier bidding and procurement systems to its current Ariba Buyer system, aiming to enhance the e-commerce applications in its operations. The Ariba Enterprise Sourcing now completes ICTSI's web-based sourcing process, which includes registration and management of suppliers; generating requests for inquiry, proposals, and quotations; and bid events and auctions. A second newly implemented system, the Ariba Contracts, simplifies the handling of long-term supplier contracts and negotiated purchases. It also ensures compliance from ICTSI's buying users. The two Ariba systems have enabled ICTSI to move from traditional bidding and sourcing to enterprise sourcing. In doing so, ICTSI aims to eliminate traditional inefficiencies in supplier transactions and procurement, maximize the company's administration of purchases and improve supplier relationships. ____ CSX lines and Horizon Services improve supply chain security with microsoft.net-connected software. http://www.horizonservicesgroup.com Ocean shipping company CSX Lines of Dallas, Texas, and its subsidiary Horizon Services, have announced a commitment to develop information technology applications based on Microsoft .NET technology. These will support U.S. government efforts to secure international maritime trade against the threat of terrorism. Microsoft .NET is based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology. Microsoft, CSX Lines and Horizon hope .NET to facilitate seamless information flow throughout the supply chain by making business-to-business systems integration possible. CSX and Horizon Services plan to roll out their CaptainSuite software over the next year, with SEDcaptain the first .NET release. SEDcaptain is a tool that will enable shippers to automatically create and file Shipper Export Declarations directly to U.S. Customs using the agency's Automated Export System (AES). ____ Vector Informatics implements procurement software http://www.vector.gr Vector Informatics Systems has agreed to the implementation of its ShIP Procurement software at the shipping company Primal Shipmanagement Inc. The project began with the implementation of the supplies module and will continue with the installation of the spares module and the shipboard solution onboard the three bulk carriers of the company. Primal hopes to achieve the streamlining and automation of processes by using Vector's ShIP Procurement software. ____ *** EQUIPMENT *** Skarpenord launches level-measuring radar http://www.scana.com Scana Skarpenord Langesund (SSL) has launched a new marine precision level radar capable of providing ullage measurements of ±0.01%. First introduced as BM70/50 in 1992, the new upgrade BM70MP represents a two-year collaboration with Germany-based KROHNE. The BM70MP FMCW radar utilizes a high precision microwave board and a linear sweep controller.
