"We are really working our people hard these days and this sort of thing permits them an escape from the demanding schedule that requires perfection out of them all," says Force Master Chief Donald Kultti, U.S. Submarine Force. "While overseas on active duty, our troops can't enjoy many of the things they relax with at home, so we decided to bring the games they love to them as our small way of saying 'thanks,'" says IDSA. "More than 10,000 sailors serving aboard submarines worldwide, are now enjoying the recreation and social benefits of video consoles and numerous electronic games," said Kelly Powell, head of the Mission Essential Branch, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division, Navy Personnel Command. "These consoles and games provide sailors with a much-needed distraction and recreation during the limited free time sailors enjoy on board submarines." _____ Transas installs engine room simulator http://www.transas.com Transas reports it has commissioned its Engine Room Simulator at the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Transas Marine's ERS 2000 is a PC-based networked simulator including up to 12 interactive Trainee workstations operating under Instructor control and monitoring. The simulator can be used for both, individual and team training of marine engineers in the operation of Engine Room machinery and watch keeping in the Engine Control Room (ECR). The main components of the simulator include a ship's diesel propulsion plant; ship's electric power plant and an auxiliary systems and machinery simulator. The current Transas product line for engine room simulators consists of the ERS 3000 with ECR control desks and cabinets; ERS 2000 with 'on-screen' controls; and the standalone desktop simulator, ERS Solo. _____ NMEA to hold annual convention from October 22-27 http://www.nmea.org The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has announced it will hold its annual convention from October 22 through Sunday, October 27, 2002 at Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa, Port Myers (FL). _____ ACR Electronics improves its EPIRB bracket http://www.acrelectronics.com US maritime safety communications equipment company ACR Electronics has made improvements to its bracket for fixing an emergency position indication rescue beacon (EPIRB) to a ship. The new bracket is lighter and more durable, it says. _____ Broadgate warns shipping industry not to delay fitting VDRs http://www.broadgate-uk.com Voyage data recorder manufacturer Broadgate is concerned that shipping companies are leaving it too late to install VDRs (voyage data recorders). In under 18 months, VDRs must be fitted to all passenger carrying ships and ro-ro ferries (by January 2004). But with only limited technicians in the world competent to install them, it is important that shipping companies do not all leave it until the last minute because there will not be enough technicans to do the work. Something similar happened with the GMDSS implementation, Broadgate claims, when there was a last minute rush for shipowners to fit GMDSS equipment by the deadline, with many owners paying hih prices for poor quality solutions. "There's a real danger that owners who leave it too late will be forced to install inferior equipment," says Chris Winkley, Broadgate's managing director. "We don't envisage any problems in coping with demand but I'm not sure everyone in the industry is as well prepared as they should be." Broadgate has recently received orders from Corsica Ferries, Nordö Link of Sweden, North Sea Ferries and TT Lines of Australia. *** SATCOMS *** KVH introduces high-speed internet via satellite http://www.kvh.com KVH Industries has developed a high-speed broadband internet solution for mariners that works in Europe only. It enables broadband (400 kbps) access to the internet aboard moving vehicles and vessels. Ships can receive internet data through the system; however they need a different system to tell the internet server what webpages they want; KVH suggests that they can use cellular phones (GSM) or another satellite phone service (Inmarsat or Iridium) for this. The service can be used to receive digital video. _____ Globe Wireless can switch operations between UK and US www.globewireless.com Maritime communications service Globe Wireless has implemented Network Operations Centre network switching capability, enabling it to switch live operations between its operations centres in Liverpool, UK and California, US, in just a few minutes. The switching is being made at regular intervals, to ensure system reliability; if there are any problems at one centre then operations can be switched to the other. *** SUPPLY CHAINS *** Tideworks Technology to provide terminal management software to Jamaica http://www.tideworks.com Tideworks Technology has been selected by Kingston Wharves, Ltd. (KWL) to deploy terminal management and container handling software at their facilities on the public wharves in the Port of Kingston, Jamaica. Tideworks will implement Mainsail Terminal Management System and Spinnaker Planning Management System, a Windows-based graphical planning system, as well as develop an interface between Mainsail and the existing Kingston Wharves' tariff, wharfage and accounting systems. _____ IBM and Dassault Systèmes to host PLM forum http://www.ibm.com http://www.ecforum.com IBM and Dassault Systemes have announced that the 2002 European CATIA Forum (ECF) will be held from November 19 - 21 at Disneyland, Paris, Newport Bay Hotel. The forum aims to educate companies in digital product development and product lifecycle management technology. Participants will include product life cycle management (PLM) experts from IBM, Dassault Systemes, and their partners (Software, Technology and Business), as well as PLM users. Presentations will concentrate on key industry issues, such as industry design, collaboration and integration with supply chain management. *** SOFTWARE *** BP Shipping uses Ulysses Task Assistant across entire fleet http://www.bpgroup.com BP Shipping has decided to use the Ulysses Task Assistant software, which seafarers can use to manage their information systems, on all 24 of its tankers and all future new builds. The Task Assistant can be used to integrated documentation and procedures, help manage risk and help seafarers manage their compliance with ISM, STCW 95 and ILO 180. "We chose Task Assistant because it it very flexible and could be tailored to BP's requirements," says BP's Martin Shaw. "It gives us the underlying network of infrastructure for continuous improvement, incorporating our entire operational and quality management system. "It facilitates control of our fleet, with instant access to information across all areas of fleet and office. It is user friendly and cost efficient, saving us administrative costs." Ulysses comments that it expects BP to be able to reduce its operational risk through using the software, since it helps seafarers gain quick access to safety information and procedures. The software also automatically fills in many of the forms which seafarers otherwise need to tediously fill in by hand. ____ Seagull introduces new computer based training module for international safety management. http://www.seagull.com Seagull's Safety Management System CBT (computer based training) module has been complemented with a new module, an ISM (international safety management) code module. The new module includes background information on the ISM Code, ISM requirements, reports, audits and revisions, plans, procedures and work permits. It also contains familiarisation exercises and assessment features. _____ Saab TransponderTech reports 500th AIS transponder sale http://www.transpondertech.se Saab TransponderTech AB has reported the delivery of its 500th AIS transponder during 2002. The company is reportedly reacting to "high pressure" due to the time schedule of the implementation of AIS; with approximately 6.000 SOLAS vessels to be fitted out with AIS-systems during the next 10 months. The high demand is expected to continue until 1 July 2003, according to Saab. "All existing tankers, approx 11.000, have to carry AIS not later than the first safety equipment audit after 1st July 2003. Furthermore, it looks like the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will decide on an earlier date for mandatory carriage for all SOLAS vessel, approx 60.000, The date may be as early as end of 2004," Saab says. _____ Ulysses Task Assistant will elminate duplicate reports for Upper Lakes Group http://www.ulysses-systems.com Ulysses Systems reports that Upper Lakes Group is "stepping up implementation of Ulysses Task Assistant to manage its fleet of 18 vessels operating on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway." Currently, all forms, manuals and procedures are being entered into the system, integrating the QS management system, with deployment on the remaining vessels being carried out during the next few months. "Since all our forms would be incorporated into the program, this would eliminate 'duplicate' reports; the same information being processed by different departments and sent to different people on different forms is a waste of valuable time and eventually money," says Janis Aldred, Quality Assurance Manager with Upper Lakes. _____ Kongsberg wins India simulator contract http://www.kmss.no Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems has won a contract to supply the Lai Bahadur Shastri (LBS) seafarer college in Mumbai, India, with a liquified gas cargo handling simulator, covering both LPG and LNG ships. There are extensive instructor facilities in a separate room. _____ THANKYOU FOR READING DIGITAL SHIP NEWSLETTER Digital Ship Ltd 213 Marsh Wall, London E14 9FJ, UK Tel (+44 207) 510 0015 Fax (+44 207) 510 2344 http://www.thedigitalship.com
