Ziglar raising serious concerns regarding the treatment of seafarers and ships arriving at US ports. During recent months the INS has instructed the US Coast Guard to require security guards on certain vessels in order to prevent ships' crew from leaving their vessels. As a result, many seafarers are being denied shore leave and private security guards with limited or no maritime training have been placed on board ships to enforce such restrictions. There appears to be little consistency with respect to the enforcement of such measures. Whilst the crew containments and security guard requirements may be strictly enforced at one port, the affected ship with the same crew on board may find that no such requirements are enforced at the next US port of call. Citing such inconsistencies, the industry appeal points out that such practices are unfair and discriminatory to those concerned. Officials at the US Department of Justice, the United States State Department, the Department of Transportation and the United States Coast Guard have also been informed of the industry's positions. It is hoped that the appeal will open a constructive dialogue between the US authorities and the shipping industry that will lead to improvements in the treatment of seafarers and ships arriving at US ports. ____ Crowley Logistics to join Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism http://www.crowley.com Crowley Logistics, a subsidiary of Crowley Maritime, reports it has submitted an application to join the U.S. Customs Service's new program, Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). As U.S. Customs enters phase three of the C-TPAT program rollout, it encourages participation by OTI, Broker/Freight Forwarders and non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCC). The program was established by U.S. Customs following the attack on the United States on Sept. 11. It is designed to develop a more secure border environment by improving the security for the transportation of passengers, crew conveyances and cargo throughout the commercial process. Crowley will, among other things, implement a verifiable, documented program to enhance security procedures and will work with Customs on a number of initiatives, including the exchange of certain intelligence and conducting joint security surveys domestically and offshore. *** SHIP SUPPLIES *** Bunkerfuels Korea team joins OceanConnect http://www.oceanconnect.com OceanConnect has announced that the entire team of Bunkerfuels Korea has joined OceanConnect.
