"This contract award is a significant enhancement to Boat Crewmember safety," says USCG. "My objective is straight forward: The EPIRB will become standard equipment for every USCG Boat Crewmember on every mission, and I hope to achieve this over the next year" USCG chose the Fastfind beacon due to its compact size, McMurdo says, enabling it to fit into a buoyancy aid pocket or in the dry suits USCG uses. Another factor was that the unit can float when in operation or if accidentally dropped overboard, and the warranty, availability and price. ______ Xantic and Iridium sign "major agreement" for distribution http://www.xantic.net Maritime software and communications company Xantic has signed a "major agreement" through with Xantic will offer Iridium's voice and data services through its international network. The site saw particular growth in usage after September 11, 2001, following worldwide efforts to tighten maritime security. The committee behind Equasis is trying to increase the geographical spread of Port State Control information made available on the service and to obtain statutory information from Flag States. "Equasis is now established as the first port of call for those searching for comprehensive data on any ship or needing to verify facts or to assess criteria that may point to a sub-standard ship," the company comments. ______ IMO announces latest maritime security regulatory plans http://www.imo.org The International Maritime Organisation Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) is holding a second intersessional working group on maritime security, from September 9-13, 2002. The most far-reaching proposal is currently a proposed international ship and port facility security code (ISPS Code), implemented through SOLAS Chapter XI. The code would have a mandatory part and a recommendatory part. It looks at ensuring the security of ships and port facilities from a risk management perspective, assessing the risks in each individual case to determine which security measures are appropriate. Governments can offset changes in threat by making ports and ships less vulnerable. Governments must carry out security assessments, which will firstly identify critical assets and infrastructures, which would cause significant loss of life, damage to the economy or damage to the environment if damage. The assessment will then identify the threats to these assets; and thirdly the assessment will identify the weaknesses in physical security, structural security, protection systems, procedures, communications, transport infrastructure and utilities which could make the port facility a likely target. Once all these stages have been completed the government can evaluate the risk. There will be minimum plans; all ships must have security plans, security officers, company security officers and "certain" onboard equipment; all ports most have security plans and security officers. All ships and port facilities must monitor and control access, monitor activities of people and cargo and make sure security communications are readily available. Ships would be subject to a system of survey, verification, certification, and control to ensure that their security measures are implemented. There are four different proposed schemes for accelerating the introduction of AIS systems. There are also draft performance standards for ship security alarms. ______ Xenex sells radar systems to Canadian Forces http://www.xenex.com Vancouver-based radar technology company Xenex Navigation has sold a Navigence XC1000S radar system to Canadian Forces, for use in inner harbour surveillance in Esquimalt, British Columbia. ______ CVigil launches camera for monitoring ships http://www.cvigil.co.uk Maritime electronics security company CVigil has launched a range of "Rapid Deployment Camera" systems ideal for use onboard ships as closed circuit television cameras.
