IDEAS FROM DAVID PATRAIKO ABOUT SEAFARER CONFERENCE i) sounds like a lot of fun ii) i'd be more than pleased to be involved if I'm in town, will know by the new year iii) the focus of the program is unclear.. make sure everything is about value added technology, which benefits the seafarer but isn't required on the ship by regulations iv) UKHO is annoyed that people aren't purchasing the electronic charts it produces.. v) question. If all that technology is there, why isn't it being installed? vi) Good contact: Lars Brodje from Satpool, has installed million dollar TV systems on fishing boats, get him to talk about why that was done.. seafarers can watch TV if its too rough to fish vi) People don't pay that kind of money just to be nice.. talk to cruiseship companies that put the stuff on vii) it could be tough to get shipmanagers to come, they say, they know what electronics are available. but certainly the equipment people would come viii) Has anybody done a survey about crew retention rate because of putting in crew communications. It could be up 20 per cent because of crew communications, which can save enormous amounts of money. ix) There have been many HR studies in the maritime industry. Pay is rarely on the top five list. Its more important that they are involved in the process as part of a team. x) Another good contact: Laurence Chauvell, from Det Norske Veritas, has written about crew communications.. he wrote a book about managing safety and quality in shipping, with a section on motivating people. He's a very flamboyant speaker and loves to talk, and is IT savvy (NB would be good speaker at conference) Karl, I am not quite sure whether it makes sense to include all the electronic bits into the conference, but maybe in terms of safety, we can do it. We have ChartCo, Teamtalk, NewsLink and AND confirmed by the looks of it. CrewLink has chickened out, Patraiko isn't available, IMO might be able to give us a speaker, the others have not responded or can't make it either. What can we do with it? What about morning session: technology that has to be dealt with by the seafarers in a business way... and afternoon services for them. So we include almost everything... About the newsletter, Karl: You'd better send me the part of the press releases that you want me to do. I'll send you the stuff back Friday midday. I still want to look into this PLM idea for a conference in April or os. In May we should do an integration one. The PLM thing should take place in Hamburg, I think. Shipbuilding is stronger there, right? What do you think?
