Financing has been supplied by the European Community, through funds allocating to helping central and East European countries prepare for joining the European Union. The VTMIS is considered the first step of building a complex coastal infrastructure to ensure safe sailing in the Black Sea. This should also help integrate Bulgarian ports more into the transport chain and link up with inland transportation by rail and sea. Transas will update existing VTS systems in the ports of Varna and Bourgas and install VTS systems covering the entire coastline from the Romanian border to the Turkish border. ___ Broadgate and Rutter get wheelmarks for voyage data recorders http://www.broadgate-uk.com Voyage data recorder manufacturers Broadgate and Rutter Technologies have both been awarded European Union Wheelmarks on Dec 3rd this year. The Wheelmark is an EU sign of product quality, compared to a type approval certificate which is recognised nationally or a class approval certificate acknowledged only by that class organisation. It signifies that the VDR is compliant with EU Council Directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment. ___ Malaysian Navy to use STN Atlas simulator http://www.sam-electronics.de The Royal Malaysian Navy has commissioned a ship bridge simulator system from STN AtlAs. The system has a replica main bridge with 270 degree projection, and a auxiliary bridge with 150 degree projection. There are briefing and debriefing stations and a range of communications functions. ___ STN Atlas to supply automation systems to South Korean engine manufacturer STX http://www.sam-electronics.de STN Atlas Marine Electroincs of Hamburg has signed a collaborative agreement with South Korean engine manufactuer STX Corporation of Changwon, under which it will supply standardized automation systems through its alliance with Lyngsų Marine of Denmark. The agreement covers systems for bridge manoeuvering, engine safety, electoinc governor and alarm monitoring system modules in addition to software support. STX will assemble the systems as part of shipborne propulsion packages, also taking responsibility for testing, sea trials, class acceptance and maintenance. STX claims to be the leading manufacturer of medium sized diesel engines in South Korea, suppling 70 per cent of domestic market requriments and also exporting. ___ McMurdo explains DSC with free CD http://www.mcmurdo.com Maritime electronics company McMurdo has taken on the task of explaining Digital Selective Calling (DSC) to people by producing a free CD. The CD promotes VHF radios McMurdo has made which can be used for DSC calls. ___ Solar Solve MD North East UK woman of year http://www.solasolv.com Julie Lightfoot, MD of Solar Solve Marine, the North East UK manufacturer of ship bridge anti glare screens, has been named "best woman in international trade" in the Barclays North East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2002. ___ SOFTWARE ___ AVECS software helps handle terrorists and pirates http://www.avecs.de German maritime software company AVECS has developed software to tell seafarers what to do in the event of terror and criminal attacks at sea. The software was developed together with the German Federal Navy and MSG MarineServe GmbH. Based on the IMO International Code for Ship and Port Security (ISPS) it contains information about both preventative measures and what to do after an emergency. ___ BP Marine online fuel risk management tool http://www.bpriskmanager.com BP Marine has relaunched its online tool to help users manage their exposure to volatility in marine fuel prices. The service provides online access to forward market estimates and indicators. Customers can request automatic e-mails when a price hits their specified targets. There is also a weekly news service produced by BP's energy analysts and trading team. There is also an online business simulator game which can be used as a training tool into what risk management is about and the effects of various purchasing options on shipping operations. "We've made the whole site much easier and faster to use, with details on how to apply risk management tools for protecting margins and controlling costs, plus budgeting and protection / planning information." ___ US Navy to use iOra shipboard intranet solution http://www.iora.com The US Navy is building a shipboard intranet system using iOra software. The software will be used to make sure that the information kept onboard ships, with information about safety, medical procedures and technical information, is kept completely up to date, without relying on CD-ROMs sent by post which can take months to reach the ships. The iOra software compresses the data and has clever tools to minimise the amount of data which needs to be actually transmitted as much as possible. ___ Sunderland Marine insurance company uses Moore Stephens software http://www.moorestephens.com Maritime insurance company Sunderland Marine has appointed Moore Stephens Consulting to install a software system to help the company keep control of risks and monitor performance indicators. The software is written on a Microsoft SQL 2000 platform, providing data to staff over the web or to their desktop computers. ___ CONTAINERS ___ 300 depots using IAS depot manager software http://www.interaset.com International Asset Systems has announced that 300 facilities are now using its Depot Manager Service. The software captures, processes and communicates gate repair and repair cost estimate data for equipment in container depots, integrating this information into the equipment owners or operators' IT systems or making the information available over the web. Shipping line staff can peruse the depot's estimates about repair costs and approve them; this data can then be integrated into the shipping line's maintenance and repair systems. ___ CSX Lines uses Management Dynamics to manage its tariffs http://www.csxlines.com US flag shipping line CSX Lines will be purchasing automatic cargo rating services from CSX Lines. CSX Lines uses the service to manage service contracts, eliminate rating errors and improve cash flow.
