MORE SMM Germanischer Lloyd German class society Germanischer Lloyd will be demonstrating its Shipboard Routing Assistance system which monitors movement of the ship in heavy seas. By using data about ship movement, together with data about how the ship is loaded, the software can calculate how much damage may occur to the ship and its cargo. The software can also be used for route planning, receiving weather data by e-mail - it can work out how much the ship is likely to rock when different routes are taken, so a route can be planned minimising the possibility of delay, ship and cargo damage. Germanischer Lloyd says that the system has been trialled on two vessels, leading to several follow on orders. Germanischer Lloyd will also be exhibiting its Emergency Response Service, which enables GL staff to assist ships in distress from their shore offices. The shore staff have computer software available which can simulate the ship's condition, enabling competent advice to be given regarding damage stability, residual strength and recommended salvage measures. SUBHEAD PSM Tank Gauging www.psm-sensors.co.uk UK tank gauging company PSM will launch a series of digital sensors and transmitters for tank gauging, dubbed the "iCT series." The sensors can transmit level, pressure and temperature via a single communication link. They have embedded programmable functions and self diagnostics. Power requirement is extremely low - up to 124 sensors can be connected to a single PC USB port without external power. The pressure sensors can take readings of 0.50 millbars to 10 bars. A specially developed ceramic diaphragm permits overloads of 25 bar with a burst of greater than 30 bar. PSM believes that this is a "one size fits all" feature which can be installed in any tank where a pressure, level or temperature is required.
