ECDIS training systems under development
(May 21 2009)
PC Maritime says that it has started development on new training programmes for ships' crews in the use of ECDIS, in light of the upcoming mandatory carriage requirements for the technology.
The phased implementation schedule for ECDIS runs from 2012 to 2018 for a number of different vessel types, and the company says it is exploring ways in which it can provide more convenient, cost-effective ways of carrying out required ECDIS training.
“One solution now under development is a CBT (Computer Based Training) program," said Anne Edmonds, PC Maritime marketing director.
"We began this last year but because of the imminent changes that were due to come into effect on 1 January 2009, we decided to put the project on hold."
"Now though, with type approval having been secured for our latest version of Navmaster ECDIS, we are pressing on with finalising and releasing a CBT program that will be consistent with the latest standards."
The system under development is being designed to provide training in all operational aspects of ECDIS, and consists of demonstrations with voiceovers, exercises and tests.
It will be offered for use on ship or ashore, for initial and refresher training, and will also be available online using the PC Maritime Learning Management System (LMS).
The online system will deliver the same training content as the regular CBT, giving interviewees and off duty officers the opportunity to prepare for assessment or refresh their knowledge wherever they have access to the internet.
