Inmarsat Training Session - Controlling and Optimising Data sent over FleetBroadband
Howard Hughes, Technical Trainer, Inmarsat Training Academy

Communication is imperative especially in a busy working environment. It is essential in sending and receiving vital information that relates to the efficient operation of your vessel. Everything needs to run smoothly. But what happens when that communication is interrupted? Could it have been avoided? How much can you get from your FleetBroadband terminal? How can you optimise your connection? Is having an unlimited connection an answer to all problems?

Howard Hughes from the Inmarsat Training Academy is presenting a session about how to control and optimize the data which is sent and received over FleetBroadband. This session is designed to give awareness on how to protect your investment. This may suit those who are working in IT or have an interest in IP management/security. The topics covered will be:

  • Firewalls/3rd Party restriction
  • Using your FleetBroadband terminal to maintain network security
  • Management
  • Optimization
  • Bandwidth limits

The Use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for Monitoring and Control in Ships
George Papadopoulos, Professor Emeritus, Applied Electronics Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras

  • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) present considerable advantages since they are low power, their deployment is quite flexible and they widen the realm of environments feasible for monitoring, by adding communication among objects in the physical world. Most important, they overcome the necessity and inconvenience for wiring, thus leading to saving cabling costs.
  • Their adoption in the industrial world is gradual, as their acceptance by the industrial automation community is impeded by open issues, such as reliability, security guarantees and provision of Quality of Service (QoS). However, their wireless capability allows deployment in hostile environments, where vibrations or moving parts may prevent the use of cables that would be damaged or even broken. Furthermore, the WSNs provide network flexibility, as the sensor nodes may be relocated quickly without necessitating time-consuming cable installation and maintenance.
  • In this presentation, the potential use of WSNs in the “digital ship” will be introduced. We will distinguish between deployment in critical and non-critical areas. The relevant technologies, standards and available solutions, for both of the above mentioned cases, will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the issues of reliability and security in the critical areas of the ship.
