Digital Ship Cyprus is the world's largest conference and exhibition for digital technology in the maritime industry. Not just for IT managers, this conference is for everybody in the maritime industry who is interested in how innovative digital technologies can add value.

Special features this year include a survey of hardware and software used on board Cyprus Shipping Council member vessels presented by Hanseatic Shipping; Inmarsat presenting the findings from its second crew calling research project; and a technology showcase with some of the most exciting new digital technology.

As usual, the Digital Ship conference and exhibition is free to attend for employees of shipping companies, subject to prior registration. Attendance for IT vendors is CYP 250 / GBP 295.

Dimitris Lyras is director of Lyras Shipping in Athens. He is a qualified engineer, and Council Member of Intertanko. He is also special advisor to the board of maritime software company Ulysses Systems. Being very much involved in both the worlds of shipping and information technology, he has a unique perspective on how information technology can add value to shipmanagement, by providing people with the information they need to make decisions to improve efficiency and reduce risk, and streamlining business processes

- Inmarsat Fleet, launched in 2002, has become the standard communications fit for globally trading, deep sea vessels

- Inmarsat's plans to launch FleetBroadband in 2007, allowing simultaneous voice and IP data services, following a $1.6bn investment in the world's most advanced satellite and ground network infrastructure

12.35pm - A case study in always-on VSAT services for global vessels – Trevor Willoughby, senior sales director, Intelsat

Trevor Willoughby is one of the Intelsat's senior sales directors for EME region based in London.

He joined Intelsat nearly 3 years ago from SkyStream Networks where he was the Regional Sales Manager for Europe specialising in equipment sales for IP delivery over Satellite to Service Providers and Video Programmers. Previous to SkyStream Networks Trevor was the European Sales Manager for Scientific Atlanta specialising in MPEG -2 Video compression systems for programmers, cable operators and broadcasters as well as complimentary turnkey earth stations for video, VSAT and DAMA network applications. Trevor has over 20 years experience in the satellite industry and has an extensive engineering background.

Ms Lana Al-Salem has a long experience in business analysis and project management, as well as systems implementation in various industries including ShipManagement, capital markets, events and entertainment management, chartering, human resources and maintenance. Ms Al-Salem holds a PhD. degree in Information Systems. Ms Al-Salem is currently the director of Project Management at SpecTec for both Greece and Cyprus.

- 90 per cent of seafarers can now call from the ship, a big change from 2001, when the majority of seafarers were not able to call from the ship

- However most vessels provide crew calling on the bridge, which is inconvenient for both seafarers and the shipping company, and limits the number of calls that can be made

- 90 per cent of seafarers say they would pay for more phone calls if they were allowed to

FleetBroadband is Inmarsat's next generation of maritime services delivered via the world's most sophisticated satellites - the I4s. It will bring you simultaneous voice and broadband data through a single terminal incorporating the latest technology, to take you seamlessly into the IP age.

Inmarsat will be delivering a 2-hour 'training' session on FleetBroadband at Digital Ship Cyprus. During the session, Inmarsat will update you on the technology behind FleetBroadband, the proposed coverage, the prospective services, and the new terminals and network.

There will also be a live demonstration of standard maritime applications across the BGAN network outlining the potential benefits of this technology to the maritime community.
