Seagull AS of Norway started some years ago to cover the need of seafarer’s training - required by the IMO’s STCW - by developing computer-based training. Each course, or training subject, is contained on a compact disk, which provides both multimedia presentation of the material and an assessment. The latter is then used by the ship owners and operators to keep records of their crew’s total training profile.

While not alone on the market, Seagull’s strength lays in the sheer number of the titles; more than 80, all of them addressing the many aspects of today’s seafaring and safety at sea. Their unique feature is that all of them can report their degree of completion and assessment result to an administrative tool that logs, sorts and do basic statistics on the crew’s training progression. Scheduled training is automatically updated and customer-specific ones can also be included, thus making the workload of the training officer on board much easier.

Today more than 2200 vessels sail the seven seas with Seagull’s Onboard Training Library. Many ship operators enjoy its simplicity. It will run on any off-the-shelf PC computer, which can be an existing, separately purchased, or part of a turnkey delivery from the company. Crewmembers can start a training session, interrupt it, and resume when time permits. At any time a progression report can be printed out.

Once the training performed and assessed, the result is then uploaded to the training officer, or further up to the shipping company’s office, as an encoded file that cannot be tempered with. The company’s policy is to lease each training module on a yearly basis for a very small fee. By doing so, Seagull hopes the keep its customer up-to-date with the constant evolution of maritime regulations as the modules are constantly modified and re-published to reflect these changes.
