DAY ONE MORNING - Sept 18

Chairman: Geoff Arnold, managing director, IT-Maritime Pte Ltd (previously general manager, fleet management systems, World Wide Shipping Managers)

9.25 Welcome address from SingTel

9.30 Keynote speaker: Patrick Slesinger, CIO and director, Wallem Shipmanagement - Cost of data versus the value of knowledge

- Managing data can be a costly activity - but the cost is quite small when you consider the information that data might provide you with. How do you work out how much time and money to spend on data management?

SESSION - How satellite communications can add most value to ship operations

10.00 - Plans for FleetBroadband - Piers Cunningham, director of maritime business, Inmarsat.

Inmarsat is launching its new FleetBroadband system in November this year which will provide ships with 432 kbps at reasonable price rates, and is expected to become the standard satcom system on new vessels.

Piers Cunningham, director of maritime business with Inmarsat, explains how the service will work, how to upgrade to it and what shipping companies can expect from it

10.30 - Tips for getting more out of your satcoms and controlling your satellite communications costs.Morten Lind-Olsen, CEO, Dualog

The marine communication industry is changing – internet is soon coming on board your ship:
Do I need Broadband on board?
How can I take advantage of available and affordable bandwidth?
Can I secure current investments and still surf on the broadband wave?

Morten Lind-Olsen is CEO of ship-shore data communications leader Dualog, and has been based in Singapore for the past 12 months. He will explain some trends and changes taking place in the maritime communication industry. This includes presenting tips for shipping companies who want to learn how to get more out of the satellite communications investments they have already made, and be prepared to enter the new broadband era.

11.00 BREAK

Sponsored by SingTel

11.30 - Providing crew communication facilities - can it contribute to making a shipboard career more attractive / improve the attractiveness of a specific employer? Results of research commissioned by Inmarsat.
Piers Cunningham, director of maritime business with Inmarsat
- Offering crew GSM facilities - how much does it cost the seafarer and shipowner, and will crew use it?
- Impact of offering crew communications on company attractiveness to seafarers
- Shipboard GSM vs crew phone
- Potential impact on safety and how to deal with this

12.00 GSM services over Inmarsat - Robert Johnson, CEO, Blue Ocean Wireless
Introduction and outline of shipboard GSM services
Anticipated cost to the shipowner
Anticipated cost to the seafarers
Pluses and minuses to shipowner / seafarer of shipboard GSM vs wired crew calling phones
Other uses of shipboard GSM - eg engine monitoring, telemetry data, and why this is better than wired services

Blue Ocean Wireless has launched a revolutionary service to install GSM communications systems onboard vessels, so seafarers can make phone calls and send messages using the GSM phones nearly all of them already have. The shipowner no longer has the hassle of managing crew calling cards, and does not have to pay for any equipment. The costs the seafarer pays for GSM calls are reasonable too. Robert Johnson, CEO of Blue Ocean Wireless (previously director of maritime and aviation with Inmarsat) explains how it works and what shipowners can expect.

12.30 - Panel discusion: What is the best way a shipmanager can use satellite communications to improve the service they offer to their customers, and the employment attractiveness to ship operators? Participants: Morning speakers plus Ms S. Saraswathi, IT and communication department, Eastwind Shipmanagement; GA Shankar, IT superintendent, NYK Shipmanagement

4.30 WHAT IS VSAT

Many shipping company IT and technical managers are aware that VSAT satellite communications can give them an always on satellite communication to the ship, but aware that it comes at a price. This session is for IT and technical managers of shipping companies who want to learn about VSAT in more detail. From this session you will learn from the leading VSAT vendors about the experiences shipowners have found from VSAT so far, including providing better crew communications, ship-office co-ordination and training; you will also learn about what is involved with making a VSAT installation, what is involved in VSAT terminal installation, the costs, equipment and coverage areas of C and Ku band, and the experiences of shipowners who have done it

4.30 - Overview to maritime VSAT - what it can do, how much it costs, benefits and disadvantages, and how to persuade your management to buy it - Pal Jensen, VP sales, maritime division, CapRock Communications

Installations of VSAT broadband satellite communications are racing ahead in some parts of the world, particularly Scandinavia, by shipping companies enticed by the prospect of a flat monthly fee for satcom (instead of costs per minute), the ability to provide officers with internet access and the ability to contact their families while at sea. Pal Jensen, who has probably more experience than anybody else in the world selling VSAT to the maritime industry (through his previous employment at Telenor) explains how VSAT works, what shipowners can expect from it, how the costs compare with Inmarsat.

5.00 - Experiences installing VSAT - Brent Horwitz, vice president of sales, MTN

MTN, based in Florida, is one of the world's largest maritime VSAT companies. It has a large number of cruise ship companies among its customers.

TMSA stands for Tanker Management Self Assessment. It is a system developed originally by ExxonMobil, and now adopted by all oil majors, to score the management system which tanker companies have developed, in different categories such as navigation and maintenance. It does not specifically require software, but does ask for many complex measuring and monitoring systems, which most tanker companies say can only be achieved using sophisticated IT.

Chairman - Dimitris Lyras - director, Lyras Shipping.
9.30 - Capt R. Janardhanan, QHSE manager, Anglo Eastern Shipmanagement. Is TMSA changing the way we operate tankers - a ship anager's Perspective" -
Changes TMSA has made to the tanker industry in the last 3 years
