INTRODUCTION

New navigation technology brings new benefits and new challenges – the purpose of this conference is to help shipping companies make the most of the benefits and avoid the problems.

In his keynote speech, Kjell Rein, vice president, safety and quality, Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skibsrederi, will present his experiences with using electronic charts and other new technology, explain what he believes are the main possibilities that the new technology creates, and how to get around the problem of overconfidence in what the computer says.

Bjorn Holta from Norwegian Maritime Directorate will present the results of Norway’s analysis into 2,975 accidents, including 444 collisions and 909 groundings, and explain where technology can help and where it can hinder. Margareta Lüthöft from Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute will talk about how human factors can be better taken into account.

The afternoon session will look at ways to get more value from specific equipment, including AIS, bridge systems and voyage data recorders, and how much training is necessary to get the most out of them. After the break a session about electronic charts in Norway will review Norway’s plans to make ECDIS complulsory on high speed vessels and a session on how electronic charts force the blending of old and new skills.
