INTRODUCTION

Most shipping companies would dearly like to see always on, fast data communications with their ships, because they are used to having them in their offices. Of course while such communications services are available, they come at a price.

This one day conference, “Broadband Maritime Satellite Communications” will help shipping companies plot a course through the bewildering options, and help decide how much communications they want and how much it will cost them.

Ultimately the decision of how much satcoms you need is very hard to reach in a logical fashion, and comes down to personal preference and money available – there are merchant ships trading internationally spending anything between $300 and $5000 a month. But this conference should help you make your decision.

The conference is led by Dr Panagiotis Nomikos, president of the Association of Shipping Company IT managers (AMMITEC) and now business development director of maritime software leader Danaos Management Consultants.

This conference will feature Inmarsat, Connexion by Boeing, Telenor, INVSAT / Sperry, Broadband Maritime, Nera, Schlumberger and Caprock presenting their technologies, both available now and in the future, and explaining how much they cost and what the benefits are.

Maritime communications expert Gregor Ross will explain the benefits of Inmarsat Fleet MPDS. Many shipping companies are now installing Inmarsat Fleet as their standard equipment, but not yet taking advantage of MDPS, which allows an always on connection with no cost when no data is sent.

There will be case study reports from Danaos and Sperry Marine, about the use of VSAT always on connections on Danaos and Peter Döhle vessels, explaining how the communication services were utilized, and if the benefits can be quantified.
