Digital Ship’s one day conference at Norshipping, broadband maritime satellite communication, was an opportunity to hear firsthand about the different opportunities from emerging and future maritime satellite communications technology, the installation costs, equipment costs, airtime costs, and benefits, and how you can do the most with the least expenditure on airtime and equipment.

Delegates booked from Stena Line IT Services, Wallenius Marine, Kongsberg Maritime, Lloyd's Register, Invsat Ltd, Thrane & Thrane ChartCo, Globe Wireless, Radio Holland B.V Middle East, Furuno Sverige, C2SAT Communications, Maritime Communication Services

They heard from managing directors of Inmarsat, Connexion by Boeing, Broadband Maritime, Nera (DVB) about what they have to offer. They heard real life case studies with Peter Döhle Schiffahrts (presented by Sperry Marine), Wallem (presented by Wallem’s CIO, Patrick Slesinger) and Danaos about how VSAT and Inmarsat Fleet satcoms are used in innovative ways.

Delegates heard experts from Rydex and Marlink explain how you can make a narrowband satcom link feel like a broadband link, and how you can help make the decision between VSAT, Fleet and other options, and use an always on connection over Inmarsat Fleet MPDS.

Chairman: Dr Panagiotis Nomikos, business development director, Danaos

9.15 Expert overview by Dr Panagiotis Nomikos.
How do shipping companies make a decision about how much to spend on broadband, and how do they plot a route through the options available?

- Negative effects of the lack of sufficient bandwidth for data communications with vessels so far
- How the fleets of the world have missed so far the "information revolution" due to the lack of bandwidth
- How this picture is changing positively with the new offerings. In my view the "bandwidth opening" for deep-sea commercial vessels started with the Fleet offering (that I will mention briefly) and is further enhanced with all the other broadband offerings that followed.
- Efforts of all the companies who are included in the program of the day, showing the momentum of an "emerging industry".
- How the availability of new technology combined with plenty of available capital for investment are creating the right mix of conditions for rapid modernization of vessel IT and communications
- Long-term positive consequences of the Broadband adoption, and I will talk about the "vessel of the future" and her interconnection to the office IT infrastructure in a modern way.

Dr Panagiotis Nomikos is business development director of Danaos Management Consultants, one of the world’s largest maritime software companies. Dr Nomikos is also president of the Association of Shipping Company IT Managers (AMMITEC). Danaos Management Consultants was, founded in 1986 by Dr. John Coustas, director of shipping company Danaos, who has a PhD in computer science, and Dimitris Theodossiou, IT manager of Danaos.

9.30 Malcolm Tindley, manager, director, customer service programs, Europe and the Middle East, Sperry Marine.
Case study: Broadband communications and iFleet
report on sea trials on Peter Dohle containership with Sperry Marine and INVSAT.

Sperry Marine has conducted a full trial into broadband shipping technologies with container vessel Kopiapo, operated by Peter Döhle Schiffahrts.

The vessel has a 2.8m VSAT antenna from INVSAT, a 10 port wireless communications system onboard (enabling masters to see all the information on the ship's bridge, apart from radar, from anywhere on the vessel).

It will also install the 2 mbps StarStream receive only broadcast internet service, sending requests for pages over Inmarsat Fleet MPDS.

It will be using the service to make remote diagnostics, and to monitor what is going on onboard from shore. It will also improve quality of life for seafarers.

"It's giving a lot of opportunities," said Captain René Menzel from Döhle. "In the future we will have an internet connection - so what not start now." Malcolm Tindley is director, customer service programs, Europe and the Middle East, Sperry Marine. Sperry Marine is one of the world’s largest manufactures of bridge systems, and recently completed a trial with Peter Döhle Schiffahrts to test using broadband and VSAT technology.
