3.00 Panel discussion - how do we move forward with Shipdex - how do we encourage more shipowners to require it and more equipment manufacturers to develop Shipdex documentation?

3.30 Close

NOTES ON SHIPDEX It is fairly easy to see the benefits of using electronic documents rather than paper - electronic documents are so much easier to retrieve, update, communicate, manage and archive.

It would be great if documentation could be supplied directly from equipment manufacturers and shipyards electronically - and not in a pdf (which is just a paper document in electronic format) but with an XML structure so it can easily be absorbed into other systems (such as maintenance and purchasing systems).

Unfortunately making such a move is easier said than done - many companies are slow moving, there are some perceived advantages of paper over electronic data (people are more comfortable with it today), and above all there is no industry standard for an electronic data system which everybody can use.
