Christian organisation caring for working and retired seafarers

BISS has been running since 1818 to care for spiritual and physical aspects of sefarers life. It operates centres in ports around the world that offer a place to relax, food, Internet connection, television etc. Information and help is available from chaplains that endeavour to visit each ship during its often short time in port. The centres often run a minibus service taking seafarers to he town centre and to shops and then back to their ship.

BISS has a number of grants available to seafarers or their dependents in need both from a discretionary fund and specifically for those undergoing a course of study. Assistance may also be provided to crews abandoned without the means to support themselves.

A 24 hour helpline can be used both by crews or sometimes by shipping lines and offers fast assistance from the chaplian on duty.

BISS also runs fundraising and awareness campaigns, and retirement homes for older seafarers. All the contact information for its centres in different ports is available on the web, as well as details of how to get more involved in its activities.
