The UN of the sea ![]() The IMO is the United Nations’ special organisation for maritime affairs. It is involved with maintaining safety standards and standardising international maritime laws and conventions. The governments of member states are responsible for implementing and enforcing IMO conventions that they adopt. The IMO site contains a lot of information about IMO activities, including news, safety, environmental protection, legal issues etc. The resources of the IMO library are on-line, including an index of resolutions, current awareness bulletin etc. There is a publications catalogue for ordering print and electronic copies of IMO documents. The site is fairly data heavy, with flash introductions and a lot of the content only available in Acrobat (pdf) format. However there are a lot of resources here and much that is interesting and relevant to seafarers. |
