Free medical help to seafarers by
radio
This service was started in 1935 to provide advice and assistance to seafarers during medical emergencies. CIRM now has a centre in Rome with trained radio operators available to give help round the clock completely free of charge.
Experienced physicians are employed to provide medical advice for common problems and injuries, while a range of experts in various medical specialities are on call to give further information.
The centre is able to co-ordinate any evacuation and will stay in touch with the patient continually until they reach a hospital where immediate treatment can be given.
The website is also translated into Italian, and has a medical journal detailing relevant cases available for download and contact information.
The research section lets you download some articles of the research journal which presents papers relating to seafarer health and working conditions. Beware of clicking on "download": This will start downloading a 3.5 Mb file without warning!
