The ISSA represents over 1,800 ship suppliers in 82 countries on its books and maintains a database of ship supplies to facilitate ordering through a standard product numbering system.

The advantage of a product numbering system is that orders can be made simply by searching through a catalogue of supplies, finding out the relevant number and then sending that and a few other details rather than a long product description. This reduces communication costs and lessens the chance of mistakenly ordering the wrong part.

ISSA says that it developed its own numbering system because it was unsatisfied with the one IMPA had already established and IMPA would not allow it to modify the numbering for its own uses.

Through the website you can search for contact and service descriptions in the supplier database, or search for a product in the on-line catalogue.
