Daily low-data news and sports digest in 22 languages

Newslink is an up-beat news and entertainment service designed to bring good, morale boosting information to seafarers. It provides a daily on-line shipping newspaper with 22 country-specific regional editions, all in English. The newsletter is four pages in length, with a page each of national news, regional news, international news and sports news. There is also a news digest edition that takes up less space.

It is designed to provide more of a letter home than a comprehensive news report, and can be customised to users’ requirements. It is transmitted as a compressed file to minimise communication costs, with graphics such as the company logo stored on the users’ hard drive.

A new section for maritime news focusses on presenting useful, timely information and helping to promote safety and environmentally safe practices. The bulletin board lets users give their opinions to other members.

A quarterly “infotainment” CD-ROM is provided free to subscribers to the newspaper. Including information on marine safety, daily crosswords and word jumbles with a maritime theme, computer based training – initially relating to computer literacy, travel information, movie and music review and a photography feature, there is enough to keep a crew occupied and entertained.
