The web's largest medical resources

The US government has set up two gateway sites to health information. Both aim to provide unbiased, accurate, good quality information to combat the enormous amount of less conscientious health sites on the Internet.

Firstly, there is a vast resource of health and healthy living information from the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest health related library. The Medline Plus service is aimed at both professionals and consumers to deliver up to date information on drugs, diseases and conditions.

Containing information and patient advice for over 9,000 drugs available in the US, categorised illness database with symptoms and treatment, and online tutorials covering common conditions and procedures. There is also a database of medical dictionaries for looking up terms or rare diseases.

Medline is a database of references to over 11 million articles published in around 4,300 medical journals. Sometimes the full article is available, while many listings have short summaries.

Healthfinder meanwhile is a resource aimed specifically at consumers and is a compilation of relevant information from many sources. It’s resources are aimed therefore at the non medical specialist and can be a better first source of information for the general public.
