Improving seafarer life through contact centres and a light website

The Mission to Seafarers is dedicated to the welfare of seafarers and to upholding standards of safety and treatment. The Mission was quick to realise the benefits of the web for communicating with seafarers and introduced a text only site, written in plain html without embellishments, over four years ago.

A new service avialable is a phone card that allows seafarers to make calls home both using land lines while ashore, and via satellite services while at sea. This makes it a lot easier to use shipboard phone services and keep track of the phone bill.

The website contains contact information on the Missions’ coordination centres around the world, a form to allow seafarers to confidentially report welfare problems or maltreatment, and information and advice concerning coping with a life at sea.

The website has the added benefit of being available for download in its entirety for reading at a later date. Thus the parts which seldom change can be kept on disc for record and users only need to refer back to news and other updated information while paying on the web.
