Inmarsat, Shell Shipping and Maritime, and maritime digital consultancy Thetius have launched a new ‘Open Innovation Challenge’ for start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The Challenge aims to identify technology that can benefit crew safety, health and wellbeing at sea at a moment when Covid-19 has exposed the welfare of seafarers to global scrutiny.

As a result of the travel and ship-access restrictions imposed by Covid-19, UK-based company Avenca has reported a high level of interest from around the world in the company’s recently launched AURA remote analysis service.

The cruise sector needs to think hard about how it can meet the social distancing requirements linked to COVID-19 while still delivering the expected luxurious experience of being onboard a cruise liner, all without destroying and bankrupting the industry, said Christian Ioannou, managing director of MCTC Leisure.

ABS launches remote online training

ABSG Consulting has launched a remote training online option to provide its classroom training courses during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

As part of Kongsberg Maritime’s plan to ramp up remote delivery of targeted education using digital platforms, Kongsberg is offering the first basic Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) courses to be available fully remotely from start to finish, including the practical part of the training.
