Globalstar launches IoT module

Globalstar is launching a new STINGR system, integrating the company’s STX3 simplex satellite transmitter with a GPS receiver and a dual band antenna, to create a unit for use in Internet of Things (IoT)-based solutions for remote sensing, tracking and monitoring of assets like ships and containers.

Inmarsat and mobile operator Vodafone have announced a roaming agreement which will look to integrate technologies from the two companies to enable international satellite and cellular roaming connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT).

Shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SK Shipping, Intel, Microsoft, the Ulsan Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (UCCEI) and the Daejeon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (DCCEI), which aims to create a new ‘Eco System’ for the development of smart ships.

ESA launches satellite IoT tender

The European Space Agency (ESA) is making an Invitation to Tender for its ARTES Advanced Technology project, which aims to drive prototyping of low data rate satellite communications concepts that would be suitable for M2M and IoT applications.

A 38-year old Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, the Pierre Radisson, is to gain a new lease of life with the installation of a range of new hardware and software systems by ABB, including a remote monitoring system that will allow shore based teams to directly diagnose problems on the vessel from shore.

IoT to boost beer freshness in shipping

The Internet of Things is finally being put to practical use in the maritime industry, with Globalstar announcing that its STX3 chipset is to form the basis for the first Internet of Things (IoT) system for monitoring craft beer while it is shipped around the world.

Kongsberg has established a new subsidiary called Kongsberg Digital, to focus on advanced data, software and simulation products and hold group responsibility for developing new digital solutions and related technology alliances.
