“Today we see far fewer ships operating just with a single line of communication. For example, it’s now common practice to equip an onboard network with one or two back-up lines. In fact, VSAT packages now routinely include L-Band along with any Ka or Ku offer. The business is changing and now, more than ever, digital service providers need to keep up with the pace,” warned Nabil Ben Soussia, CEO Asia, Middle East & CIS at IEC Telecom Group, during a speech made at a recent offshore industry conference.

Intellian’s C700 Iridium Certus terminal has been approved for use in Japan. The C700 is the first Iridium Certus terminal to be approved for the Japanese maritime market.

UAE-based satellite operator, Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) has been steaming ahead with the development of its new half a billion-dollar L-band satellite system. Built by Airbus with operation planned for 2024, Thuraya 4-NGS will enhance coverage, boost speeds, and enrich the products and services portfolio. Digital Ship caught up with Mr. Sulaiman Al Ali, Thuraya’s CEO, to find out how the company has been progressing with the development of its latest programme.

Intellian has received type approval from Inmarsat for its new FB250 and Fleet One L-band terminals. This news makes it one of the first to market with user terminals for operation on Inmarsat’s L-band network, ELERA.

Inmarsat has expanded its agreement to deliver maritime broadband to Hapag-Lloyd, after the global transport group renewed its Fleet Xpress contract for a further five years and committed 33 more ships to the market’s leading very small aperture terminal (VSAT) service.

KVH ships record number of VSAT units

KVH Industries has announced that it shipped more than 500 VSAT satellite communications systems during the first three months of 2021, marking the second consecutive record quarter for VSAT shipments.

Marlink has been selected by Turkish tanker operator Güngen Denizcilik ve Ticaret A/Ş (Gungen Maritime & Trading) to provide Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress service on four of its six vessels.
