New simulator opened in Liverpool

UK Shipping Minister John Hayes was among the guests at the official opening of a new Maritime Bridge and Engine Simulator training facility in Liverpool, as part of a maritime graduate talent programme that has been developed in partnership with UK industry body Mersey Maritime.

The initial evaluation of a prototype augmented reality system for the maritime industry, based on Google Glass technology, is underway at the Baltimore campus of the Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies-Pacific Maritime Institute (MITAGS-PMI) in the US.

Annual ECDIS competency course launched

ECDIS Ltd has launched a new ECDIS Annual Competency Assurance Training (ACATS) service, which aims to keep bridge teams up-to-date with the navigation technology regardless of which of the 38 manufacturers of ECDIS currently circulating the industry have supplied the equipment.

KVH has announced that it has begun offering Videotel’s new safety and training video about the Zika virus free to all mariners worldwide, with the goal of increasing awareness of the prevention measures that can keep seafarers and their colleagues and families safe from the disease.

Modal Training, a multimodal logistics training centre in the UK set to open later this year, reports that it has invested £2 million in a simulation setup from Kongsberg Maritime to offer courses for the maritime sector.
