Furuno adds new solid state radar

Furuno has introduced a new solid-state radar with pulse compression and Doppler frequency shift sensing technology, the DRS4D-NXT.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The 60cm Radome is designed for use with both Furuno’s NavNet TZtouch and TZtouch2 multi-function displays, and includes new features such as a Target Analyzer, which is based on the Doppler technology and will automatically change the colour of approaching targets to show any hazards.

Green echoes are stationary targets, land, or approaching targets moving at a velocity of less than 3 knots. Echoes dynamically turn red when targets are approaching at a speed of 3 knots or faster.

This also applies if following another vessel – if the target is getting closer at a speed of 3 knots or more, the echo will be depicted in red on the screen.

Furuno says that the new radar acquires and tracks targets in virtually every sweep, or just a few seconds, showing the target’s speed and course vector. The unit’s ARPA signal processor can display and track up to 100 targets in a single sweep.

A True Trail feature has also been included, allowing the user to graphically see the direction in which a target is moving, independent of their own vessel’s motion.

The Radar features a 3.9-degree horizontal beam width, supplemented by Furuno’s RezBoost beam sharpening technology which can synthetically sharpen the beamwidth to the equivalent of 2 degrees, providing better target separation.{/mprestriction}
