Korean telecoms company KT has announced the launch of an extended GSM LTE network that can extend 200km from shore, in comparison with the 50km coverage more common today, which it intends to use to power a new range of maritime safety equipment connected to the Internet of Things (IoT).

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The new OTHAD (Over The Horizon Antenna Distribution) GSM antenna system uses horizontal distributed antennas to extend the reach of the company’s LTE Time Advance network from a base station on land far beyond that possible using traditional systems.

KT says it has already conducted tests of the system which have included a successful OTHAD LTE video call with a Marine Research Centre on Korea’s Jeju island, at a distance of 185km.

In conjunction with the introduction of this network KT will also be launching a range of IoT-connected life jackets, which will be able to automatically transmit data for use by search and rescue teams when the jacket comes into contact with water.

KT is working with Korean clothing manufacturer Kolon Industries on the new life jackets, which will automatically inflate when changes are recorded in the attached water pressure sensor, and begin to send information about the wearer to emergency services.{/mprestriction}
