Genscape, a provider of real-time data for commodity and energy markets, has developed a service that it says is capable of tracking over 120,000 ocean-going vessels each day.

Using a combination of artificial intelligence, near-Earth satellites and thousands of ground-based antennas, Genscape Vesseltracker will track merchant ships to provide supply chain and market data.

“We are in the midst of transformational change in maritime analytics,” says David Francoeur, chief marketing officer at Genscape Vesseltracker.

“Our proprietary network delivers an exceptionally high level of accuracy and comprehensive geographic coverage.”

As well as tracking location, Genscape’s network aims to predict the ports and arrival times of the world’s entire maritime fleet, potentially providing valuable data for energy and commodity markets.

Recently, the company demonstrated the capabilities of the network by pinpointing the movement of a U.S.-flagged tanker, Polar Discovery, which left the Alaskan port of Valdez on September 26 to deliver the first Alaskan consignment of crude oil to South Korea since 2004.
