Videotel offers free training package on 2020 compliance

Maritime training provider Videotel has announced that it is offering the maritime industry free access to its new training package, “The 2020 Sulphur Regulations – Achieving Compliance”.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"} As the January 1, 2020 0.5 per cent global sulphur cap approaches, the free awareness video sets out the new regulations, where and how they apply, how they are to be enforced and what crews and owners need to do to be compliant.

There are three main ways to achieve compliance:

  • Burn compliant fuels
  • Use alternative fuels
  • Install an exhaust gas cleaning system or ‘scrubber’

The video outlines the pros and cons of each of the above options and explains what ships need to do if things go wrong.

The training package covers the following areas:

  • 2020 sulphur regulations overview
  • Methods of compliance
  • Fuel availability
  • Fuel Oil Non-Availability Report (FONAR)
  • Ship Implementation Plan (SIP) and inspections

“Making sure that the industry complies with the sulphur 2020 fuel cap is so important that we wanted to show our support for this industry by offering this advice for free,” said Raal Harris, Videotel’s managing director.

“We have had tremendous support from within the industry in putting this video together and making it freely available seemed the right thing to do. Preparation is key to achieving 2020 compliance and we look at the key ways in which this can be achieved,” he continued.

Videotel is also working with Industry partners on an eLearning course, primarily aimed at ships’ Chief Engineers that presents the key points of the MARPOL requirement, including implementation planning, Fuel Management and planning, procedures for establishing compatibility, fuel switching, and use of 0.4 per cent max S fuel in boilers which will be available later this year. {/mprestriction}

    Wärtsilä has successfully delivered its brand-new Cloud Simulation solution to Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy. Comprising a combination of cloud-based solutions, including navigational, engine room and liquid cargo handling simulators, Wärtsilä is the first company to offer class-approved cloud-based simulation technology to the maritime industry.

    The online installation was deployed in early July, allowing the Academy to continue providing its training despite ongoing social distancing and travel restrictions.

    Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy is a maritime training provider in the region, which is now powered by Wärtsilä Voyage technology. The addition of the online installations of NTPro and TechSim will broaden the simulation-based training offering available at the Academy.

    Cloud Simulation technology takes simulation beyond the boundaries of the physical classroom, to provide location and device independence, and to deliver simulation-based training wherever, whenever, and however it is needed by the user.

    Remote access to training allows students and instructors to reach various Wärtsilä Voyage simulation models on their personal devices, away from the classroom and without the need for specific Wärtsilä software. Both the TechSim and NTPRO platforms in the cloud provide a classroom configuration with trainer and multiple student stations for familiar instructor-led training.

    “We are excited to be at the leading edge of this technology in the maritime industry and enable trainees to acquire a wide range of navigational and engineering skills, without the need to physically attend the training centre. By having remote access to the simulation library and any classroom-based exercise, instructors can easily manage the application and deliver the training,” commented Torsten Büssow, director, Wärtsilä Voyage.
